A Peek Under the Hood: The Business of seekBromance.com

Hey bros,

As the dude in charge of this business, I can’t tell the world every detail about what seekBromance does and how it does it. But there is still a lot I can talk about, and I believe in letting my customers in on as much as I reasonably can. So if you’re curious about the business model, read on. If not, don’t sweat it.

You probably already figured out that seekBromance is a “freemium” business. Your membership, your bro-file, and your access to the database are completely free, and they always will be. The only things that require money are the ability to send a private message to another member, and the ability to chat online with another member. A lot of the old-school dating sites adopted this model long before anyone started using the word “freemium,” and many of those sites are still going strong today.

So what makes seekBromance different, apart from the obvious fact that we’re strictly for dudes who are searching for platonic bros? For one thing, seekBromance is not owned by a public company, which means that we don’t have to worry about making Wall Street happy every three months. The big players in online dating have been consistently raising their prices way out of proportion to their costs: some are now sticking you for fifty bucks a month or more. I won’t do that. Sure, seekBromance is a for-profit company, but in this business, the best way to profits is to make the site available for as many people as possible. That’s why I plan to keep the subscription rates as low as possible, and supplement them with a few online ads.

Some of you might be thinking, “Dude, if you want low rates, why not just make the whole thing free and use only ads?” The thing is, going that route creates a lot more problems than it solves. Why? As soon as you allow free communication for everyone, you’re going to get flooded with hordes of spammers, scammers, identity thieves, and other various scumbags from all corners of the planet. You can clean them out if you keep close track of them, but new ones always spring up. It’s a huge drain on the site owner(s)’ time, effort, and other resources. Time and resources that could be spent on improving the site for the “real” customers.

Anyway, making these guys take out a credit card, even for just a few bucks, instantly drives away about 99.99% of the cybercriminals. It’s not that they can’t afford it, because many of them can. It’s because credit card transactions have become a lot more traceable over the past few years. So, unless you’re part of a fairly sophisticated money laundering operation, you can pretty much forget about using a credit card without getting caught. It’s no longer a good option for trying to raise cash in the black market.

So that, in a nutshell, is why seekBromance works the way it does. Like all other businesses, seekBromance.com wants to provide value for its customers, and in particular our value comes from as big a database of compatible guys as we can gather for you. Any time you, as a customer, have ideas for how we can achieve that goal faster, or how we can make the database better, drop me an email. I might not do what you say, but I promise to listen to what you have to say.

Later,
-the Blog Dude
