Tailgate Healthy, Bros

Jeah!

Football season is back, dudes. And that means . . . tailgate parties!

Tailgate parties have a reputation of being orgies of beer and junk food, and depending on whose party you join, that reputation can be well deserved. If you’re no longer a teenager, and have started to worry about that gut, it might seem like a bad combination.

The good news is that there are a few simple tricks you can use to make your tailgate party a lot easier on you physically.

1. Have a big meal before you head out.

If you do, you won’t want to snack as much during the tailgate.

2. Stay active.

Don’t be a chair-potato the whole time, bro. Toss a football around with your friends. Walk around the parking lot and take in the entertainment. (Who knows? You might meet even more bros you’ll want to hang out with at some point.)

3. Bring better snacks.

Forget the candy bars and pork rinds. Carrots, celery sticks, and mixed nuts are the way to go. You won’t grow your gut from eating that stuff. As for non-alcoholic beverages, stick to bottled water over sugary sodas.

4. Limit your beer intake.

They don’t call it a “beer gut” for nothing, dude. Of all the alcoholic drinks you can consume, beer is pretty much the highest calorie count per ounce. If you must drink beer, set a quota of three or four bottles for the entire afternoon, and stick with that. (You can add another bottle if you’ve been drinking only ‘lite’ beer.)

If you want to look into other possible drinks and their calorie counts, go for it. Just keep the total amount down to the equivalent of the calories in 3 or 4 regular beers.

5. Ditch the stadium food.

Not only is it way overpriced, and not only is the quality of stadium food pretty lame, but it’s also very unhealthy. If you can, finish your eating before you go into the stadium.

6. If it’s cold enough, wear gloves.

No, really. Are you seriously going to put your hand in a bowl of cheese puffs with your gloves on? Think about that.

So that’s it for advice on tailgating. Have fun and party on, bros!
